Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a very specific type of manual therapy.

To try to nail it down in a sentence, it is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain.

Sustained pressure on a stressed area is at the heart of it. The body is highly electrical and when a muscle is injured, the resistance in it goes up. If it increases dramatically it can pass a place on the scale of resistance that is called the pain threshold.

By applying pressure to the site of increased stress, resistance in the muscle is decreased. This is actually experienced both in the muscle being treated and by the therapist. As the pressure is kept constant the client feels a decrease in tightness and pain while the therapist feels movement and softening.

In this way resistance can be decreased below the pain threshold and the client can find relief. The goal is to relieve the pain and dysfunction by treating the underlying cause.  By treating the soft tissues of the body in this way the central nervous system can be balanced.

The St. John Method is a type of NMT.

Pain Causing Elements That Neuromuscular Therapy Addresses: :

  • Ischemia:
Decreased blood supply in the soft tissues that makes the area very sensitive to touch

  • Trigger Points:
Quite painful areas in muscles that refer pain to another part of the body

  • Nerve Compression or Entrapment:
Pressure on a nerve by dysfunctional muscles

  • Postural Distortion:
Imbalanced muscles cause skewing of body posture
